Updating HPE Storage OS

Update recommendations are available in Overview detail pane of the Systems screen. The update link navigates you to the Software detail pane view to install the updates. An alert appears in the System screen when an update package is staged on the storage system. Expand the alert to view the links to the update package and release notes. After initiating the update, you can monitor the task progress in the Update detail view and Activity screen.

To update the HPE Storage OS on a storage system, do the following:

Prerequisites
  • The storage system is running HPE Primera OS 4.0 or above.

  • Verify that the update package is in staged state. If an update package is in staged state, then:
    • Either the package was auto downloaded by the storage system and staged or,

    • The package was manually uploaded to the storage system through CLI or Concorde UI and staged.

    You cannot manually upload the update package from HPE SSMC.
  • Enable the given Remote Support configuration panel settings from the Edit dialog or Settings detail view in the Systems screen:
    • Receive update recommendation: The option allows the storage system to receive update recommendations from HPE InfoSight. You receive the recommendation when new updates are available and applicable for the storage system.

    • Allow software downloads: The option allows the storage system to automatically download and stage an update package when the package is available in HPE InfoSight.

    The options are enabled by default.
Procedure
  1. On the main menu, select Storage Systems > Systems.
  2. On the list pane, select the storage system, and then click Update HPE Storage OS in the Actions menu.

    The Software detail view opens.

  3. The Software detail view has four panels:
    OS Summary:
    Displays the following information about the HPE Storage OS:
    • Current version

    • Component version: Displays the component name and version.

    Update Overview:
    Displays the status of the update. For example, running, completed, failed, or failed with warnings. If the status displays failed, you can abort or resume the update. The following information about the update is displayed in a tabular format:
    • From version

    • Target version

    • User

    Another table displays the information about the performed step, date, and state.

    Available Updates:

    Displays the updates available on the storage system and the updates that you can download from HPE InfoSight. Displays the following information about the available updates in tabular format:

    • Update: Name of the update package.

    • Priority: Importance of the update package for the particular storage system.

    • Synopsis: Brief description about the features in the update package.

    • Install time: Average time required to install the update package.

    • State: Indicates the state of the update. For example, whether the:
      • Update is on the storage system (staged).

      • Update is available on HPE InfoSight (downloadable).

      • Update is being installed (Install in Progress).

    • To view the release notes of the available update, click the release notes icon ().

    • You can select the update you want and click the Downloading package (for updating HPE Storage OS) icon () to download update package. Click the remove icon ().) to remove the package from the storage system.

    Update History:

    Displays information about the completed updates. The panel provides information about the update, installation date, synopsis, and user.

  4. Select an update package from the available updates table in staged state and click Install.

    The Update HPE Storage OS dialog opens.

  5. Read the update instructions and select the check box.
  6. Click Yes, Install to start the action, or click Cancel if you are not sure about the update.

    Monitor the progress of the update in the Update Overview panel.

  7. If an update fails, a you can rerun the update after fixing the reason for failure. Click Re-run (Re-running update HPE Storage OS) to rerun the update.
  8. The updates may fail due to warnings also. You can either fix or ignore the warning. Click Re-run and select the Ignore warnings check box to continue with the update even with the warnings. Alternatively, you can fix the cause of warnings and rerun the update.
