Create Virtual Volume

Tip: You can select the Advanced options check box at the top of the dialog to specify CPG options for Allocation warning, Allocation limit (when supported), and for virtual volume Special attributes.

General

Name

Enter a unique name for the virtual volume.

System

Select the storage system in which you create the virtual volume.

Domain

The domain in which you create the virtual volume.

Policy

You can select an available policy to assign to the virtual volume.

Provisioning
Choose to create either a Thin Provisioned or Fully Provisioned virtual volume depending on your requirement.
NOTE:

You can select only Thin Provisioned virtual volumes from HPE Storage OS 4.0.0 and later.

Dedup and Compression

Select Yes or No depending on whether you want to create a deduplication and compression enabled virtual volume.

CPG

You can assign a CPG to the virtual volume. A CPG allocates space on demand as the size of the data being stored increases.

Size

Enter the size for the virtual volume. You can select from one of the three available units: MiB, GiB, and TiB.

App Volume set

You can associate the virtual volume to an existing app volume set or create a new app volume set and associate this virtual volume. To create an app volume set enter a unique name and click Enter. You can also select an application for the app volume set.

Application

Application for which the app volume set is created or for which you want to create. Type of the application instance consuming storage from the virtual volumes on an HPE 3PAR storage system.

Enter or select your choices for required and optional settings.

Protection And Additional Settings

Volume

To specify settings such as Copy CPG, Number of volumes, and Volume set, click the Volume expand icon ( ).

Snapshots

To select a snapshot policy from the created policies, click the Snapshots expand icon ( ). The snapshot policy specifies the policy name, schedule, retention duration, expiration duration, and name pattern. Default policies available are Hourly, Daily, and Weekly.

If you try to assign snapshot policy to a virtual volume which is part of a virtual volume set that already has a snapshot policy assigned to them directly, then a warning message is displayed.

If a snapshot policy is already assigned to the associated app volume set, you cannot assign a snapshot policy to the virtual volumes associated to the app volume set.

Remote Copy Group

To view the Remote Copy groups to which the virtual volume has to be added, click the Remote Copy Group expand icon ( ). The drop-down displays the RC group name, mode, and configuration. If the target array is not assigned for the virtual volume, there are no Remote Copy groups to display.

RMC Protection

You can specify a protection policy for the associated virtual volumes from the available policies. The RMC Protection drop-down is expanded by default.

Click Add policies and follow the instructions on the dialog that opens.

Export

To export the new virtual volume to hosts when the virtual volume is created, click the Export expand icon (), click Add, and then follow the instructions on the dialog that opens.

Special attributes

To specify volume ID and enable or disable options such as stale snapshots, restrict export to one host, zero detect, retention time, and expiration time of the virtual volume, click the Special attributes expand icon ( ).

You can enter or select your choices for these advanced options.

When you have completed your choices, click Create to start the action and close the dialog, or click Create + to start the action and keep the dialog open.
