Logical drives overview

A logical drive provides an area of usable storage capacity on a portion of one or more physical drives. These physical drives are grouped into a storage array. Unlike physical drives, logical drives can use storage space from different locations.

The purpose of a logical drive is to organize the storage capacity of physical drives into smaller, logical units.

The data stored in a logical drive is directly stored on the physical drive but is logically separated from other logical drives. The logical drive can act independently from the physical drive and from other logical drives. A logical drive can span physical drives within a storage controller subsystem, but not across multiple storage controller subsystems. Create logical drives using an existing array based on the available capacity of the array.
