SMB file shares

The SMB protocol is a response-request protocol that facilitates communication between a client and a server to establish a connection.

Using the SMB protocol, an application (or the user of an application) can request access to a network system for shared access. This allows user access to a remote, shared server for the purpose of using files and directories there, or to access resources, such as printers. Later versions of SMB enable end-to-end encryption of SMB data and protect data from eavesdropping occurrences on untrusted networks.

Administrators configure SMB on a per-share basis using the HPE StoreEasy Storage system, or for the entire file server using the full suite of Microsoft tools. Administrators can enable SMB for a variety of scenarios where data crosses untrusted networks. SMB also supports the use of Windows PowerShell cmdlets, so an administrator can manage file shares on the file server from the command line.

HPE StoreEasy management console provides a user-friendly interface to accomplish many tasks from a "best practices" standpoint. HPE StoreEasy also allows the use of PowerShell commands to complete these tasks. Supported SMB features include the following:

Permissions

Security

Caching
