Replacing physical drives

Prerequisites
Before replacing a physical drive used for storing data, make sure that the replacement drive meets the following requirements:
  • The same physical drive type and the same form factor as the failed physical drive

  • The same size or larger

  • The same RPM or faster

  • The drive is in the proper carrier (smart carrier or low profile carrier)

Procedure
  1. Back up any volumes in the storage array for the physical drive.
    WARNING:

During the rebuild process of replacing the failed drive, there is a greater chance of another drive failure due to the extra activity. Therefore, back up any volumes to prevent potential loss of data.

  2. Locate the failed physical drive.
  3. Pull the lever on the failed drive, extract the drive, and insert the replacement drive.

The Smart Array controller discovers that a new drive has been inserted and starts the process for rebuilding the parity for the logical drive.
