Registration ID

Given with the product upon purchase. This number represents your right to install the particular type of license on a particular type of switch.

Hardware ID

Provided by the HP switch you will be installing the Premium license on.

Generated by the My Networking switch portal. The following procedures explain how to obtain this number which enables the Premium license feature on your switch.

Credentials

To perform tasks related to HP Switches, you must have credentials, switch passwords, and sign-in information for the My Networking switch portal.

Installing a Premium license

Use these steps to install a licensed feature in a switch.

  1. Locate the registration ID. When you purchase a software license, you receive a folded license registration card. The registration ID is located on the inside of the card, in the upper left corner.

  2. Get the switch's hardware ID. Establish a console connection to the switch CLI and enter Manager level, using the enable command if necessary and the switch password if required.

    Example

    HP Switch enable
    HP Switch#

From Manager level, issue the licenses hardware-id <license type> command.

    Example

    HP Switch# licenses hardware-id premium

  3. The CLI returns a hardware ID number. Copy the hardware ID number from the screen. You must enter this number in the next step.

  4. Get the license key.

    1. Navigate to the My Networking portal at http://hp.com/networking/mynetworking/ and sign in.

    2. Click My Licenses.

    3. Enter the registration ID.

    4. Enter the registration details.

    5. Click next for hardware-id query.

    6. Accept the End User License Agreement. A license key is displayed.

    7. Copy the license key from the screen.

    8. Point your Web browser at the My HP Switch portal (http://my.HP Switch.com) and sign in.

    9. Click the My Licenses tab, enter the registration ID and the hardware ID.

Copy the license key from the screen. A copy of the license key will be emailed to you.

  5. From a CLI console, save the switch configuration by using the command write memory.

  6. Enter the license key into the switch. From a Manager-level prompt, issue the command licenses install premium <license-key>.

    [NOTE: ]

NOTE: The license key is not case sensitive.

    Example

HP Switch# licenses install premium AA000GG000-A-0123ABC-ABCD123-0A2B3C4-0123ABC

  7. Reboot the switch to activate the licensed features.

    Example

    HP Switch# boot

    – or –
    HP Switch# reload

Starting with software versions A.15.16.xxxx, K.15.16.xxxx, RA.15.16.xxxx, and YA/YB.15.16.xxxx, the Premium license is automatically enabled. After the software is upgraded to these versions or later, the Premium license is activated no matter whether the premium license was installed for the previous version or not.

[NOTE: ]

NOTE: This feature is already available for WB software.

Upgrading to A.15.16.xxxx, K.15.16.xxxx, RA.15.16.xxxx, and YA/YB.15.16.xxxx or later version enables a permanent Premium license in the switch, which remains enabled even if the software is downgraded to the previous version. Use the show license command to identify the permanence of the Premium license.

Example

HP-Switch# show licenses

Feature Group License Status
-------------------- --------------
Premium Permanent
OSPF
PIM-SM/DM
VRRP
QinQ
OSPF v3 (IPv6)
BGP

[NOTE: ]

NOTE: Starting with software version A.15.16.xxxx, K.15.16.xxxx, RA.15.16.xxxx, and YA/YB.15.16.xxxx, except for the auto-enabled Premium license, you cannot install a new license. Using the commands license hardware-id premium and License install-id premium causes an error message such as: License Key already installed, can't generate Hardware Id.

Moving the license from the current device to another

The license key generated by the My HP Switch Portal can only be used to enable the license features on one device. The Premium license is portable, letting you move your license between devices.

[NOTE: ]

NOTE: After software version A.15.16.xxxx, K.15.16.xxxx, RA.15.16.xxxx, and YA/YB.15.16.xxxx, all switches will have permanent licenses. Once these software versions are installed and the original Premuim license is uninstalled, the default license is Premium.

To move your license from a current device to a different device, you must uninstall the license on the current device. A new registration ID will be generated for the new device once this procedure is complete.

To move the license from the current device to another:

  1. Uninstall the license on the current device and obtain the Uninstall Verification Key.

    Example

HP Switch # licenses uninstall premium
                           **** CAUTION ****
Completion of this operation will remove the functionality that is enabled in the premium feature group, and will delete the configuration for those features from the active configuration. Device will be rebooted, do you want to continue [y/n]? y
Do you want to save current configuration [y/n/^C]? n

    .........SG710AW039-V-K8XQXD6-XW63VR2-6MR2QCB-JMFVYXT

This uninstall ID must be entered into the www.hp.com/networking/mynetworking portal to recover the license for use on another system. Please login to the portal and register your un-installation ID. You will receive a new registration ID allowing you to install this license on another system. Use the 'show licenses uninstalled' command if required. Where

SG710AW039-V-K8XQXD6-XW63VR2-6MR2QCB-JMFVYXT is the uninstall verification key.

  2. Obtain the hardware ID of the new device.

Establish a console connection to the switch CLI. Enter Manager level and use the enable command and switch password to obtain the hardware ID.

    Example

    HP Switch enable
    HP Switch#

  3. At the Manager level, issue the command licenses hardware-id license_type to identify the current device license.

    Example:

    HP Switch# licenses hardware-id premium

Copy the hardware ID number from the screen.

  4. Generate a new registration ID

    1. Go to the My Networking portal (http://hp.com/networking/mynetworking/) and sign in.

    2. Select the My Licenses tab, and then select the Transfer licenses to new platform in the Manage Licenses section.

    3. Enter the uninstall ID and hardware ID.

    4. The device’s registration ID is generated and displayed.

Copy the registration ID number from the screen.

  5. Obtain a new license key.

    1. Go to the My Networking portal (http://hp.com/networking/mynetworking/) and sign in.

    2. Select My Licenses.

    3. Enter the registration ID.

    4. Enter the registration details including the hardware id of the switch where you are installing the license.

    5. Accept the End User License Agreement.

    6. A license key is displayed. Copy the license key from the screen.
